This post was originally published on Thursday, April 12, because I started the blog in the wrong place.
So begins another blog project.
Recently I began making beaded jewelry. It started innocently enough, in
a misguided attempt to make inexpensive personalized holiday gifts for
friends. The gifts turned out all right, but the "inexpensive" part was a
bit off, because of course I became rabidly obsessed with a new
crafting opportunity.
Then there was rationalization. I thought, if I can sell some of these
earrings on Etsy or whatever, I can justify this terrible habit to
myself. Then I started dreaming up all these amazing things I was going
to make and sell: earrings, rings, knitwear, geeky things, awesome
tchotckes!
But let's be realistic. I am not going to be the next Etsy star, or
major knit designer, or hilarious blogger who can start new memes at
will, or even somebody who can manage to produce cool stuff that people
might want to pay for with any kind of regularity. I'm way too lazy.
When it boils down to the choice between making use of the 9,000 bits of
crafty supplies I've accumulated and moved across the country multiple
times, or watching another episode of Star Trek: The Original Series on
Netflix, Kirk and Spock will win. Every time.
That said, I, like many of you out there, am on a continuous quest to
improve myself. To achieve goals, to do what I set out to do, to make
enough money to buy more booze. I need to be more productive! It is time
to be the person I want to be. The person who makes cool things as well
as watches hours of science fiction television shows and drinks beer in
dive bars. Plus I just moved to New Jersey and I don't know anybody, so
now seems like as good a time as any.
So this blog will document my efforts to be more crafty, with a purpose.
I'm gonna make things. If they seem awesome, I will try to sell them.
And if I end up on Regretsy at any point, I will die happy.
